Northern Baikal Fishing

Tour Overview

This trip takes you to the remote wilderness on the northern shores of Lake Baikal, the world’s oldest and deepest freshwater lake. Baikal is 750km long from north to south and though the southern shore is very developed and a standard stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway for many tourists, the northern shore is like another world. Towering snow-capped mountains ring the northern part of the lake and, unlike the south, the waters still retain the clearness and transparency for which Baikal is famous. Until the BAM railway was built in the 1970s the area was inhabited almost exclusively by indige-nous Buryats and nomadic Evenki reindeer herders, whose villages and camps still dot the landscape to this day. Early June is breeding season for pike so a great time to go fishing. 1-metre long pike are quite common, and 1.5 meter long ones are not unheard of. The delta areas described in the itinerary are particularly rich in fish life as the mineral content of the rivers is 500 mg per liter, whereas Baikal’s waters are almost pure - 120 mg per liter. The 40km long Yarki island stands between the delta area and the rest of Lake Baikal, meaning that the mineral content remains practically the same as in the rivers and attracts a large number of fish to breed. This trip can also be done as an ice-fishing trip in winter. Early April would be a good time for this. In that case a snowmobile would be used instead of a speedboat to get around.
